Neues Modelbuch (New Model Books for Embroidery and Lace) 1596 and 1597

Wow! What a find! Two period embroidery and lace pattern books online.

Siebmacher, Johann: Schön Neues Modelbuch von allerley lustigen Mödeln naczunehen, zuwürcken unn zusticken, gemacht im Jar Ch. 1597, Nurmberg 1597 [VD16 S 6256]

It has embroidery pattern graphs, mainly counted work, in a wide variety of widths and complexity.
A nice graph of an Imperial eagle
It has smock neckline embroidery patterns with the design for the bottom of the neckline slit already graphed out.
Drawn thread work patterns at least I think they are, they may also be reticella.

Siebmacher, Johann: New Modelbuch, darinnen allerley gattungen schöner Mödeln der Newen außgeschnitnen Arbeit ... zuneyen, Basel [1596] [VD16 N 1328]
Lots of lace patterns, I think they are mainly Reticella and Punto Aria, but may be bobbin lace patterns as well. I'm not a lace maker, so my knowledge of lace pattern types is limited.

These are GREAT! Thanks, so much!

This one and this one both are reticella/drawnthreadwork patterns - you are right. Though they can easily be used for counted thread embroidery and also for lacis.

They are gorgeous! Thanks for posting them.

Just in case you haven't seen it, there are 452 textile/pattern &c books available from Arizona U (http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books.html). PDFs admittedly, but the Giovanni Ostaus (1561) book I have so far downloaded is chock full of ornament/pattern/needlepoint designs.

I'd forgotten about that resource, thanks for the reminder!

Thank-you! Wonderful resource. The patterns are usable for a number of different work. The ones you see as necklines are probably for church vestments, but would work well for necklines. The book has a number of lace patterns which could be worked in reticella, punto in aria, filet lace, bobbin lace, and a couple of other lace techniques. What I find fascinating is the graph pages at the end. Were they for graphing your own or for working netting??? Thanks bunches.

There are also these lists of pattern books online

I collect Period Pattern Books. :-)

And there's lots of good stuff at the Arizona site. I have *several* of those PDFs

WooHoo! And you can download it as a PDF!

I"ve passed the info along. You've made a lot of stitchers very happy people tonight!

Wow...somehow I have missed that 'download as a PDF' link this *whole* time.

*head desk*

Good to know now!

[identity profile] mmcnealy.livejournal.com 2008-08-11 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Where exactly on the screen is it? I'm missing it too.

[identity profile] hsifeng.livejournal.com 2008-08-11 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
In the upper right hand corner of the BSB screen in this line of text:

" [Projektbeschreibung] [Digitale Bibliothek] [Impressum] **[PDF-Download]** "

YIPPEE!

*grin*

The internet is going to spoil me rotten. With all the free stuff out there, you'd think I would never need to buy books again. And you would be WRONG! *chuckle*

OK, I couldn't get the PDF download to work in the translated site (they have a little Brit flag that takes you to a nice English version of the PDF information), but I figured out how to do it on the German side. Nice!

Sweet! Thanks so much for pointing this out to me.

This whole thread is AWESOME! I've just learned my first Bobbin LAce pattern. It's a Torchon. Now I'd like to branch out and make specific patterns from the 16th Century for my garb. Thanks to ALL who posted PDF links!
