I caught somebody hotlinking to one of my images on my website. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but what a pain! Off to go rename it and change the file.
Hotlinking to display a picture is just like regular picture displaying, only people are displaying images that don't reside on servers that they own. Its a real pain for site owners cause it eats up bandwidth and we don't get any traffic in exchange.
I keep an eye on my referer log, and if a site comes up as pointing users to my site, I go check it out. In this case it was a French message board, and I found that they had hotlinked to one of my images.
I suppose there are other ways, but it would be a bit more complicated and involve some programming to do a comparison between the number of times the page was looked at and the image accessed.
