If you were ever curious about what styles were worn at the Saxon court before the "Princess dress" came into fashion, (which might give clues as to the construction) well now we've got some more pieces in the puzzle.

Lucas Cranach painted a book of the people at the Saxon Court, some of them in quite informal poses and appearing to be in the middle of conversations. Each person depicted has their name, a short verse and their coat of arms down below, some have the coat of arms of the city that they are from or have the name of their town in the rhyme above their heads.

Das Sächsische Stammbuch - Mscr.Dresd.R.3 - The Saxon Pedigree
A collection of portraits of Saxon princes, with rhyming text, from the period
1500 - 1546

This one, is a gown in a transitional style, part Master of the housebook dress with the neck chains and part Saxon court style with the cutout front, brustuch and lacings.

This picture of two women,  makes me wonder if we're seeing the same style of dress, but the lady on the left is pregnant, and the lady on the left isn't. But either way, you've got to love the green Zopfe and the red and gold striped Haube on the other.

Cranach did us all a favor by painting most of the portraits in 3/4 view,  and some of them from the back,  and side, (this is crucial to understanding how the dress might be constructed, and how it should fit from all angles).

There are also women in multi-parti dress, which may be heraldic dress, 108, 149, 158.

In the back, there are flip pages, where first you see the person as an adult, then you open the flip, and you see them as a child.   And then there are these three young ladies, in beautiful silk gowns that look to be pink/blue shot silk taffeta.

There are plenty of other lovely pictures (200+ total), including lots of men's clothes too, these were just the ones that caught my eye tonight.

[profile] aclisto posted about this earlier, but in case you missed it......

The Medici Archive Project has gone online! W00t!
This site is in English and has a huge collection of correspondence, tailor entries, entries about food and wine, specific people, political dealings, all business of the Medici's. Its got a top notch and easy to use search engine too.  The database is searchable by many facets including People, Place, Topic, Time, etc. Plus its got English synopsis of the original Italian, both of which are on the same page. On top of the great search engine you can mark records that can either be printed out or emailed to you. They really did a nice job thinking of all the ways that someone would want to do research on the archive.

"This evaluation version of MAP's Documentary Sources database currently describes 200 volumes of documents in the Medici Granducal Archive (Archivio Mediceo del Principato), with document records for approximately 10,000 letters and biographical records for approximately 11,000 people. "

I'm always on the hunt for new online art resources, today I found some new collections of links to new resources that I didn't know about.

Humbul Humanities web, http://www.humbul.ac.uk/mla/
There's a lot on this site that I haven't had time to go through yet.

A new site I found through them is Vivarium: HMML is the home of the world's largest collection of manuscript images and of The Saint John's Bible, a handwritten, illuminated Bible in modern English. http://www.hmml.org/vivarium/

Also, all you Flemish and Dutch researchers, here's CODART Research resources for Dutch and Flemish art
in the Low Countries and abroad

I ran across this interesting illuminated book from 1531 with lots of good *color* pictures of men and especially women in common clothes, standing next to their heraldic shields.

It also has lots of nice caligraphy, and all the text in the book has been transcribed and is in the text box on the right.

http://www.notthafft.de/archiv/chronik1531.htm

Click on either Große Darstellung (langsam) or Kleine Darstellung (schneller) , they both bring up the manuscrip, but Grosse brings it up in a larger format than Kleine.

To navigate between pages either:
- click on the thumbnail image of the next page, labeled "nächste Seite:"
- click on the button labeled Vorwarts
- Scroll in the text box on the right hand side and click on the page title (its in red)

Enjoy!

These are from the University of Heildberg.

Instructions
1- Click on a link to take you to a codex
2- Click on Einband vorne in the Inhalt section
3- Click on the - sign at the top of the page
4- You will now see thumbnails (usually the first set is the blank pages at the beginning of the book)
5- Click on the > to take you to the next set of thumbnails
6- Click on a thumbnail to take you to the detail image.

The Rijksmuseum has a search for professionals. Unfortunatly you can only search by one facet at a time, (period, artist, material, etc.) and while searching with the english search is very useful, in order to get to the actual detail record, you have to change the lang= tag to be lang=nl

Other than those little things, its a good search and lots of fun. Hopefully they will get more digital pictures up soon. *sigh*

Katherine Barich on the German Ren list posted this site today, and I've been browsing around, just found thie great page. The majority of the site seems to be about ordinances on golden chains, but the pictures are pretty

Here's a couple of fun links I ran across today.

Bodleian Library's Manuscript browse page. Ordered by century and place of origin. Has really nice scans of the images.

Early Manuscripts at Oxford University - Digital facsimiles of complete manuscripts, scanned directly from the originals

Finally, The British Library's Digital Catalog of Illuminated Manuscripts

Yesterday, I spent the entire day going over my found citations for this paper and then finding them in the school's databases and catalogs. So now that I am all organized its off to the library for me to go pour through the stacks and stand over the copier.  Then if I'm a good girl, I might even let myself photocopy some stuff for my own costuming research.

Fencing news: I kicked rear last night in class, I'm chalking it up to the seminar this weekend.

And for fun links, check this out. Its all the illuminated manuscripts that have a person weaving in them that are in the National Library of the Netherlands, 4 of them are tablet weaving Madonna's and one of them is using a box loom.

All the spinning ones are here, there is a nice picture of some women in  beautiful Burgundians, with taller truncated hennins. I haven't figured out what the magic search word for knitting is to find those ones yet.
