Just to stir the pot... even though I probably shouldn't.

Do you think that LJ would have a problem if I made an icon out of this image? It DOES show breastfeeding....

*snicker*

Noooo! A nipple! My eyes are going to fall out of my head now!

As long as it's not your *default* icon, it doesn't break their silly little obscenity rule. Apparently, the whole damn brou ha ha was started by a guy who had some sort of classical art as an icon, and when he was "reported", he started reporting feminists and breastfeeders because he knows both are militant. Ugh.

Oh geesh, what a ugly guy to do such a thing.

I feel a little used. Still think the whole thing is just moronic, but used.

How horrible. It takes a very small mind to do something like that.

Oh, and thanks, thanks, thanks for the picture marion. That's one of the periods I do most, as you know, and I am still nursing (yes, she's two, but she loves her "titty").

So, do either of you think that she has a modified gown specifically for nursing, or that lacing may have been common, just not depicted in art of this period?

tee hee - I was trying to figure out the same thing. All I know is that I've seen icons 100x worse than that around LJ, so surely they can't throw a hissy fit over your pic.

Actually, if it's a belted gown you don't even need lacing, not when they're that wide. I have several dresses with a slit down to the waist. I keep it closed by overlapping it a little and belting it at the waist and putting a small penannular broch at the neck. Then I use a shift with slit over the breasts so I am covered in front even if the dress would gap. It's the most comfortable style for nursing, very easy access. I also use either the herjolfsnes cut or the St. Clare cut and leave openings in the front-side seams, since they are less visible. You jsut need to make them long enough.

Your welcome!
REALonline has quite a good collection of manuscript and other drawings from that general time period so you might take a look at it, if you haven't already.

di it! do it!

lactavistly yours,
me

ps: not knowing what time period or class i am yet, i liked peasant blouse withdrawstring + overdress with lacing up the front (summerwear at pennsic, anyway)... a non-nursing person i met thought that large overdresses might have had armholes big enough that you could fit the baby's head through...or the breast out, depending on the situation... with the shift open down the front... she promised someday she would put her documentation on the web...
