Oh, delightful!!!! I will send for the exhibition catalogs cited and let you know what kind of additional details are given, that is, if you don't beat me to it :)

Do you think that the hatpin may be what is called an agraffe in English?

I've never heard of an Agraffe before, so perhaps it is the same.

I bet you'll beat me to it, I don't have a local library card yet, I still need to get one. But I *DO* know where it is, and its on the way home from the postoffice.

I am excited to announce that the catalog was right here at PSU, and I have it in my hot little hands. I have to seem to be working at the moment, but I wanted to report that this 'halskrause' and a barett of the same time period are thought to be gifts to a church in 1541 of the King and Queen of Hungary as an offering of thanks for the birth of a child. It is thought that Erzherzogin Anna wears a similar piece in a portrait painted in 1544 by Seissenegger. I think this portrait couldn't have possibly been painted in 1540, but closer to 1544 because of her apparent age in another Seissenegger portrait in 1537. I think it might be this one:

I have a fairly good size b/w scan of this from a book of Seissenegger's work, but still can't quite make out all the details. It does seem to have a similar type of pattern.

I'll see if I can crop the B/W and post it with a link.

I'll try my hand at translating (and giving the original too) later. The picture is small and in b/w so your on-line image is much better. What a find!!! It's woven wire according to the description.

So the picture online didn't come from the exhibition catalog? Interesting....

I wonder if this necklace is made of wire like one would make needlace? But I'd need a much closer look at it to make sure.
