What I find interesting is the beggers shirt, which appears to have gathers at the center neck. Not a big bunch of them, just a few.

Interesting picture. It almost looks like they decolorized and slightly simplified the clothes worn by the higher class people. That neckline reminds me of what happens if you make the neckline too big then try to bring it in a bit to salvage a mistake.
