I had long been looking for a nice clear image of the women washing the clothes scene from Splendor Solis. Textiler Hausrat has a black and white image of it, and The Tudor Tailor has a nice full sized color image of it, so I thought I was happy.

Ha! Little did I know that there were other pages with great scenes in the margins

Here is an online site with high resolution images of the 22 color plates, which makes seeing certain details a whole lot easier!
The Splendor Solis By Salomon Trismosin

Starting at plate 12 is where the figures in the margin start to get interesting. Plate 16 has a garden banquet scene with a nice golden edged Steuchlein and one of the very rare saffron yellow steuchleins too!

Plate 20 shows a room of children playing, I love the little hobby horses and the pinwheel sticks.
Plate 21 is the scene of the women washing clothes, wooo look! A black apron!

yay black apron! i always find it interesting that whenever you see people doing laundry it's always lengths of fabric!

I've been thinking about that, its probably easier to draw than wet clothes.

I have seen one Flemish painting showing laundry out to dry in a field.

maybe they just washed sheets more often! although you'd think there would be scads of wet socks!

Socks one could easily dry in the house or over a window sill. Sheets or fabric take up so much more room.

The children in plate 20 scare me! :)

Thanks again for wonderful information. And I just love the margins - those flowers and birds are just so pretty. I saw a painting of shirts laid out in a field, in the Prado - and didn't realise I could photo it! (Silly me - gives me a reson to go back though!)

Do you remember who the painting was by?

Do I heck!! I could tell you pretty much exactly where it was - on the medieval floor, if I have it right, but I was so desperate to see as much as possible that I didn't stop to take notes - sorry. It was pobably Flemish, or Northern European from what I remember of the style. And then I blew it by spending at least 30 minutes looking at Rogier van der Weyden's "Deposition from the cross" in total awe, and taking photos, once I had seen everyone else doing it, of a wall size painting of 17th exquisite fact and fantasy clothes, with amazing fabrics and details.

Hi, about four years late to the party, but...

Jan Brueghel “the Elder”, and Joos de II Momper, ca. 1620
"Flemish Market and Washing Place"

You can click on the little icon under the picture that isn't a magnifying glass, and eventually it'll let you download a really big picture.

amused by the naked children, as sam has spent most of today frolicking nude... er, i mean, potty training... airing himself out to avoid diaper rash... yeah, that's it...

I thought of him when I saw this picture. It would certainly save on the laundry having then run around naked...
