Lots of website updates today!

I posted the new art research page on the The Schlappe, Burgher and Landsknecht styles and a new diary on the one I made, A Schlappe in the Military or Landsknecht style

As well as a large section with pattern drafting instructions on the How To's & Tutorials page.

Also! I've got a new Catalog page up where you can order a Schlappe. There will be more hats and caps for sale in the future.

It's been a while since I've been to your site and I'd forgotten how much it ROCKS.

Your hat articles reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask for a while. I really want to make a hat like that one on the fresco of Sir John Hawkwood. Any ideas on materials and construction?

Thanks!
I'd have to do a lot more research, but I think the hat style is too late for 1300's Italy, its more similar to 1430's, which is when the fresco was painted.

1460's Milanese style

For late 1300's style, try searching Web Gallery of Art, here's one sample from a Florentine artist.

If you do still want to make this style, I'm guessing a padded roll sewn to the outside of a stiffened center tube. Cork is a possible stiffening agent, Henry VIII's hat of maintainence kept at Ware has this in the birm. The top is a larger fabric circle gathered into the top. I'd say a soft wool flannel, like B.Black and sons sells would work fine.
