I'm in the middle of trying to recreate Sabina Welserin's recipe for Lebkuchen, number 163. Currently I have melting puddles of spicy goo on a cookie sheet in the oven. Not really quite the effect I was going for...

I think this recipe is going to require a bit more work than I was anticipating....

The link doesn't work.

That sounds like the Lebkuchen from a modern recipe I made for Christmas. My mother's suggestion was adding a bit of flour, but I really don't know that the period method might be.

Thanks for that, its fixed now. Its here, http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Medieval/Cookbooks/Sabrina_Welserin.html

I think its going to require more than just a little bit of flour, probably closer to a couple of cups.

I concur with Heike. Some more flour. Are you also putting them on Oblaten? That will keep them from sticking to the pan and are the period way of making Lebkuchen.

Yup, I agree, more flour is definitely needed. The recipe doesn't call to place them on Oblaten, just a well floured wood board.

Heh, we cheated. We just bought it in a HUGE tin from the Commissary store at the base. It came in this beautiful chest from Germany and is filled with like 20 different variations of it! So far I don't have a favorite, I like them all, which is hard on my weight watchers!

Oo, my grandmother used to send us the tin from LebkuchenSchmidt.

Spicy honey goo, heehee. Thanks for the warning, I'll have a look at the recipe more closely:)

Recipe 151 works fine, its 163 which has the problem. Not sure if its a bad translation, a bad transcription or if there's an error in the original recipe, but there's a serious lack of flour in it.
