Darn it!

Here I was, thinking I was safe from buying fabric.... But FFC has just gotton a whole big bunch of silk broadcloth, silk taffetta, etc... Plus some really cool suitings that are just crying out to be made into something cool.

Gah!

You're never safe from fabric. You can run, but you can't hide!

Now I really, really want fabric. And they have yummy silk-linen blends in glorious shades.

Evil. Just evil!

Today I went looking for more dark green velveteen to match some yardage I'd bought for a skirt some time ago. The manager of The Dangerous Store said, "Hi! Where have you been lately?" I knew the fact that she recognized my face was a Bad Thing right off the bat.

The intended project is a late Elizabethan jacket (in a green/gold satin with a darker green and amber velvet spot) and the skirt. The idea was to make an open gown from more of the green velveteen. There is no dark green velveteen anymore.

So I come come with five yards of the last of the satin/velvet oak leaf stuff that I'm building my Phoenix gown out of-- and now there's no chance of getting any more. It looks like this:

I figure since the oak leaf fabric is reversible, it would be neat to flip to the other side and make an open gown to wear over the Phoenix dress.

Oh, and eight yards of a golden damask that matches the dark gold spot in the jacket fabric.

I am a fabric addict. Yup. Let's not mention the contents of the garage... I'm sure I'm going to be dead long before I use up what I've got.

It is an upholstery yardage store about two miles from where I live, called "Home Fabrics." It used to be called "The $2 Yard Fabric Store" but I guess they outgrew the name. The store is the size of an American football field.

Most of the cotton damasks range from $5.99/yd up to $8.99/yd. They are all at least 54" wide. Since it's all upholstery yardage, about 1/3 the store is useful for pre 1600 applications. Hence its nickname, The Dangerous Store.

They have black cotton velvet from $4.99 yard up to $9.99 for the really nice stuff. Their cotton velvets are not as heavily represented in the store anymore, but they are laid out in spectrum displays. So are their brocades/damasks. What they seem to have a LOT of is chenille textiles-- some of them with satin grounds. These things range in price from $12.99/yd up to $19.99; the oak leaf stuff I got yesterday was in the sale rack as half off.

And the kicker? I throw their damask yardage in the washing machine all the time. It comes out lovely; a little softer and silkier in hand and since it's a damask type weave structure, the twill surfaces become more compact and shinier, which means the stuff practically glows in candlelight. They seems to have two colors of yellows in their damasks right now-- a light butter yellow and a more golden/true yellow. The latter is what I got, and there are probably about six or so different patterns in each of the two colors. The chenille yardage (which the oak leaf stuff is a decent sample) can't be washed reliably as there seems to be a pretty even chance the chenille strings will worm.

If you want me to go looking for you armed with a digital camera, just let me know....

Marion, thanks for the link. Now it is only a matter of what to choose. The prices on some of this stuff is unbelievably low. I gave the link to one of my Apprentices, who is also having great fun.
Thanks again,
Sidonia
P.S I'm also looking for about 20 skeins of red silk embroidery thread- anybody know a good place to get some?

Glad you liked the link, I always have such fun with FFC, definitly helps keep the cost down. ;)

Where are you located? Just wondering if I might be able to run into you at an event before I move to CA in a month.

What weight and type of silk embroidery floss are you looking for?
