"Drying"...hmmmm....looks like it could be "drying and sun-bleaching" the linens? I note that most everything looks white, and we know that sun-bleaching was the common practice. What a neat picture! -El

I've loved this one for years. If you look closely, you can see the shirts have straight edges, while smocks angle out, but they seem to be about the same length. The question that keeps me coming back is whether the pants looking things on the bottom right set of washing are his or hers.

I was wondering the same thing! I do know that men's undies in Germany were more the brief kind and not the drawer's type that you see in this picture. Definitly intrieging!

both of my period maps from Belgium (Ghent and Brugge) clearly show looooong strips of white fabric drying in the sun (bleaching, I assume!) outside the city walls :)
