Nabeltuch (lit. navel cloth) or Nabeltüchlein - (lit. little navel cloth) A soft linen cloth that is wrapped around the baby's navel shortly after birth to prevent harm to the cord and the stomach.

Navelcloths were used even in the 1960s. Now they cut the navel so short that you don't need anything on it.

I'll have to ask my grandma about that, I've never heard of putting anything on the navel. In fact the current recommendation is not to put anything on it, to leave it exposed to the air and to use rubbing alcohol on it at every diaper change to dry it out and keep it clean.
