Surfing through RealOnline tonight, and found this for all my Burgundian/Early German friends..

OK, standard doublet with broad opening and lacing pairs, but there's a red shirt underneath the doublet, except you can see down at the waist that he's really wearing a *white* shirt and the red is just a dickey or a false shirt underneath the laces.

Then there's this hat, its in the back, red and gold plaid, but the plaid is on the bias. I've seen this older style of hat in various places, and I made one once. I cut it out on the bias because I felt it would give it better stretch and shape. Nice to have my assumption validated in the artwork. :D

I really need to analyze the picture of this woman. Parts of her clothing is very normal, other parts not so much. It is a nice color picture a small size bundelein, and she's wearing an earring. Not sure what's up with the over gown... There are two young boys who are wearing perfectly normal boys clothes for the period.

This is one style of hat I've not seen before, looks like a cross between a Schlappe and a Barett. Its very odd!

I remember reading an academic paper about how an earring meant "not one of us", ie a jewess or other exotic type. and so, as such, the clothing would have to be looked at as potentially allegorical....

her hair is spot on though :). nothing wierd there!

neato picture...its nice to see thta her braids looped looked much like mine (when mine were my real hair ;))

I hadn't read that about the earring, but it makes sense. There are several things about that dress that just scream "allegorical", but the head and hair are spot on.

if its truley a mix of allegorical and a few elements ("this is how ladies where their hair") that are usable, you're gonna have a bear of a time teasing out which is which!

I think the woman's dress is copied from an earlier painting, Rogier van der Weyden's St Columba Altarpiece, with just a bit updating. The painting can be seen at http://www.wga.hu/html/w/weyden/rogier/11columb/3columb1.html
